Conditional Formatting

Scenario: You want to emphasize expenses that exceed the planned budget.

First select the cell were you want to apply the conditional formatting. Then select the Conditional Formatting command under the Format menu.

When the Conditional Formatting window opens, be sure that Cell Value Is is selected for Condition 1. In the next dropdown menu to the right, select greater than.

After selecting the condition, you need to specify the cell that excel will use as a reference to apply the conditional formatting. Click on the box to the right of greater than, then click on cell B7 which holds the value for the January Budget.

Click in Format button to open the Format Cell dialog box. Select the red from the dropdown Color menu.

Then click on OK. You should see a preview format of how the data in the cell will appear when the condition is true.

Click on OK to apply the conditional formatting. The above steps have been applied to the rest of the data. Here is the end result.
